The American Women's Club of Gothenburg Welcomes You!

Welcome!

We would like to introduce ourselves. We are a group of American women who meet for holidays, lectures, craft evenings and lots of general socializing. Most of us are Americans or are married to Americans. Others of us have lived or studied in the US, so it's natural to keep up the American traditions and language here in Göteborg.

We have monthly meetings where there is usually a theme or speaker. We also gather in members' homes for meetings, craft evenings or programs. Throughout the year, we try to keep alive our American traditions. In October, we have a Halloween party for the kids. Thanksgiving is a traditional family dinner with turkey and all the relishes. We also sing Christmas carols and have a wine and cheese party. There are outings like for the 4th of July, which is usually a picnic and games. Basically, we are up for any event as a good excuse to get together. All events and a lot of other useful information are listed in the club's monthly newsletter.

Not least importantly, the club is a network. There are so many members that there is always someone who can help you with whatever you might need, whether it's finding the correct substitute Swedish ingredients for an American recipe, trading English paperbacks or finding the proper authority. This includes getting a driver's license, residency permits, schools, doctors, religious life, transportation, lawyers, discounts on trips to the USA and general tips which hopefully make everyday life a little easier. Our club is also a member of the Federation of American Women's Club Overseas (FAWCO), through which we receive a great deal of information pertaining to our situation as American women living abroad.

The American Women's Club of Gothenburg is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1948 and, although life and the club are constantly changing, the opportunity to meet and get to know other Americans remains constant. We are always happy to see new faces, whether here for temporary or permanent stay. If you are new in Sweden, it could be comforting to know that many others have experienced the same excitements and frustrations that come from living in a new country. Even if you are already familiar with Sweden, you may appreciate the chance to speak English and laugh about the American side of us that we share. We hope this web site will help you a little in getting adjusted.

Welcome to Sweden and the American Women's Club!
