Public and Private Transportation

Trams and buses

The trams and buses in Göteborg, which are usually quite prompt, reliable and comfortable, are run by Göteborgs Spårvägar. Information regarding time tables and ticket prices can be obtained by phoning 031-80 12 35 or by visiting one of their locations (called Tidpunkten) at Folkungabron, Brunnsparken, Drottningtorget or Nils Ericssonsplatsen. You can buy ticket cards at these locations or at any Pressbyrån or directly from the bus/tram driver. There are also handy route maps available.

Timetables and other information can also be obtained online from Västtrafik.

Taxis

There are a number of taxi companies in Göteborg. One of the largest is Taxi Göteborg. Tel. 650 000. You can call and book a taxi in advance as well. A taxi ride between Göteborg city and Landvetter airport costs approx. SEK 185-220. Tipping is optional.

If you've purchased the Entertainment Guide, be sure to check there for taxi coupons.

Limousine

SAS has a limousine service to and from Landvetter airport. Call 031-94 24 24 for reservations.

Bicycles

Bicycles are quite popular and useful in Göteborg. There is an excellent system of bike paths which are indicated with blue traffic signs showing a bicycle. Buying a cheap used bike is possible by checking the small ads in the newspaper (GP) or the bulletin boards in grocery stores. Prices can vary; SEK 750 is a good price. Be sure to protect your bike from theft by: marking your bike at the police station, knowing your bike's serial number and always locking it. Front and rear lights are required by law at night.

Driving cars

You must wear your seat belt in both the front and back seats at all times. You must also use your headlights at all times, even during the day. Sweden's drinking and driving laws are quite strict; the police can stop you at any time and give a driver a breathalyzer test. Being found with a concentration of 0.2 per mille or more of alcohol in one's blood is always a punishable offense.

Note that most parking slots are metered and that the meters are not necessarily located directly in front of the slot, but rather placed centrally in the parking lot or on the sidewalk. The bigger parking lots in Göteborg are: Heden near Avenyn, Ullevigarage, the Lorensbergs car park near Avenyn, Gamla Ullevi on Allén, and on Stora Badhusgatan/Skeppsbron by the harbour. The Nordstan multi-level garage is near central station and the Gårda/Focus multi-level garage is across from Liseberg.
