Basically, you can find all the activities that you enjoyed in the States, depending on weather conditions, of course. There are a number of gyms (listed under "gym" in yellow pages), which offer aerobics, body building, and swimming. Jogging is popular here, so there are many well-paved and well-lit jogging courses. One of the longest is the Delsjön jogging paths. There is also a recreation area called Skatås with running paths and a gym. For information call 25 48 11. In general, you will find all kinds of athletic clubs for such sports as tennis, golf, biking, badminton, horseback riding, etc. Many bookstores have paperbacks of the listed jogging paths, lakes, nature, etc.

Also, the beautiful archipelago is worth a visit (when the weather is nice!). Boats leave from Lilla Bommen in the center of town regularly for the island of Marstrand, Elfsborg's fästning (old fortress), Vinga and Smögen. Call Börje Börjesson Utflytsbåtar at 80 07 50 for information.

Movie theaters (see SF and Sandrews online) are also in abundance; plus a moderate selection of theaters, concerts, opera, and performances for children. The two main performance/sports arenas in town are Scandinavium and Ullevi, the latter of which holds most of the outdoor sporting events that come to town. All activities and movie listings can be found in the third section of Göteborgs-Posten (GP). A very popular event is the Göteborg Film Festival which takes place every year in Jan.- Feb. Tickets go on sale just prior to the festival.

Video rentals are very popular here. If you don't have a VCR, you can still rent movies since the rental stores rent out VCRs as well!  If you're in the market to buy one, many of the newer-model VCRs on the market allow for playback of both PAL (European) and NTSC (American) tapes.

Allemansrätt - right of public access

(See also Environment and Recycling for more detailed information.)

This is actually a law saying you are allowed to pitch a tent for a day or two wherever you want in Sweden (not land used for farming or near a dwelling). Respect this generous rule by always cleaning up after yourselves and never damaging the nature. It is illegal to take twigs, bark, leaves, acorns, nuts or resin from growing trees. This is regarded as theft. But, you can pick wild berries, flowers and mushrooms. Certain flowers are so rare, that they are also protected by the law and may not be picked. You are allowed to light a fire only if there is no risk of the fire spreading. A fishing license is required for fishing in most of the lakes, but the cost is free. For more information contact Naturvårdsverket.

Entertainment Publications Inc. publishes the Entertainment Book for the Göteborg area. This coupon book is filled with great discounts at restaurants, theaters, sporting events and much more. The AWC sells these books beginning in the Fall each year.
