Supermarkets
Some of the major grocery stores (livsmedelaffär)
are ICA, Konsum,
Bilhälls, Willy:s,
Hemköp and Vivo. All stores accept major credit
cards, bank debit cards and offer a store credit card by application. There are also small
Asian markets located throughout Gothenburg where you can find many products
which we are familiar with from the U.S. It's also good to know that the large
Konsum supermarket on the Avenyn is open 9-23 every day
Salluhallen is Gothenburg's largest
farmer's market where you can find all sorts of delicacies from around the world.
You can buy fresh cranberries, fish, meat, cheeses, breads, fruits and
vegetables, tea and many other items. It is located at Kungsportsplatsen across from the
tourist bureau.
Alcoholic beverages
Strong beers, wine, liquor and the like can only be purchased at the
state-owned package store (Systembolaget). Business hours are usually 9-18
weekdays and may vary on the eves
of holidays, so check ahead of time for such days. One must be at least 20 years old to
buy alcohol at Systembolaget. Check the pink pages of the telephone book or their website at www.systembolaget.se
for the nearest package store.
Drink mixes, beer and cider with low alcohol
content (3.5% or less) can be purchased at most regular grocery stores.
The
legal drinking age in Sweden is 18.
