Child Care and Education in Sweden

For detailed information in English about the Swedish school system, including daycare and preschool, please visit the website for the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket), choose English and then click on "The Swedish school system."

All children in Sweden between the ages of  7 and 16 are required by law to attend school. Even children coming to Sweden as immigrants must attend school unless they have completed 9 years of schooling in their countries of origin. Parents with children of school age must report them for enrollment at the education office (Skolkontoret) or their nearest school.

The school year is divided into an Autumn term and a Spring term. The Autumn term starts in August and ends in December. The Spring term starts in January and ends in June. Between terms the students have Christmas and summer vacations. During the Fall term students usually have one week off at the end of October or beginning of November (höstlov). During the Spring term they also have a week's holiday called sportlov (usually in February) and another week off at Easter (påsklov).
